The usefulness of equilibrium calculation based on thermodynamics in order to better understand the chemistry of cement hydration
The calculation of equilibrium based on thermodynamics applied to cement chemistry has been beneficial for a better understanding of cement hydration. First, the construction of phase diagrams of chemical systems relevant to cement hydration allows us to define the stable mineral assemblies that may form in a cement paste depending on temperature, pressure and the composition of the cement. Second, the calculation of the saturation index provides an efficient method in order to differentiate minerals that dissolve or precipitate but also to estimate the rates of dissolution and precipitation. Third, the existence of maximum supersaturation domains leading to an immediate precipitation, are key parameters to explain the kinetic path and thus the mechanism of hydration. The development of novel cements in order to reduce the CO2 footprint will require a regain of interest in the thermodynamic approach as the number of chemical constituents of these cements is likely to be greater.
